Devolution, Max Brooks

Devolution

★★

Unfortunately, this book disappointed. Anyone else out there devour (pun intended) World War Z by Max Brooks? What I love from that masterwork of horror is the seemingly scattered historical elements, the epistolary/oral history vibes, the feeling of found footage style action. But unfortunately that did not translate into Devolution as much as I hoped.

The additive interviews from park rangers and historians didn’t add any plot or mood to the existing storyline. And the journal style from the main character added a bit of distance for the reader that was difficult to overcome.

I read the synopsis - a small green community is overrun with a pack of Bigfoots - and I was sold! But the plot progressed incongruously and the high-tech draw of the community seemed gimmicky.

As much as I wanted to love this, it fell flat for me. We need more Bigfoot horror out in the world!
